One of the very worthwhile activities I engaged in during the 90s was to work my way through the Robert Monroe Home Gateway course. I highly recommend it.
The whole "does God exist?/it only exists in your mind" proves both sides of the equation: it is in your mind! However, that doesn't prove that God is an illusion. Is a carrot an illusion? A dog? Technically, they're all in your mind! Arguing for the limitations of human understanding is not much to stand on in the way of larger proofs. It only proves you don't know anything. I could have told you that without all the rancor.
Working with the Gateway course taught me the most valuable lesson I've ever learned: Consciousness is a launch. Your body is a launch. What you pay attention to is a launch. As you stand on the ground, both feet firmly planted, you are poised to launch. God is patient, but his creation is always poised to launch.
